What is the Furry Fandom?

It is possible to define the Furry Fandom as a “subculture” or a group of people who shows attraction towards the furry genre.

This genre entails, basically, all types of anthropomorphic animal characters (animal with human features) who are conscious of their existence. Some of the so called anthropomorphic characteristics that these characters might have are the ability to walk in two legs, the ability to speak, wearing clothes and make any type of facial expression, among others.

Furry tracks can be spotted in literature, filmmaking industry, comic strips, videogames, paintings, sculptures, theatrical plays, ancient stories, and in mythology. It is possible to spot furry in sport mascots, brand mascots, and company logos.

A furry character or “Fursona” (@panda_paco)

A fursona makes reference to a character or identity that a person takes. Commonly, these are used so as to identify oneself within the fandom. For more information, click here.

A fursuit makes reference to a suit that represents a fursona, which is designed by its owner. It is important not to confuse this term with the word “mascot”. Even though they both are associated to cosplaying, the main objective of a mascot is to represent a team, whereas a fursuit represents a fursona.

Members of this subculture are known as “furries”, or just simple “furs”. These terms derive from the adjective “furry” en English.

The furry fandom implies a great space for social interaction. Usually, furry conventions are organised, where a big number of furries, artists, and fursuiters (people wearing a fursuit) attend, coming from different countries. As well as furry conventions, there are local gatherings known as “furmeets”, where local furries draw together. These events are ideal for making new friends and getting to know furries around your area. Many times, these meetings encompass contests, talks, and even games.

The community behind the fandom has no acceptance problems whatsoever. It leaves aside any type of bigotry regarding sexuality, likes, creeds, appearances, and the like. Therefore, it provides the perfect environment to express and be oneself without fearing prejudice and criticism.
